Associate Professor

Kyriakos Sgarbas is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Patras, specializing in Symbolic Artificial Intelligence with Emphasis on Interactive Systems. He received his Diploma (1989) and Ph.D. (1997) from the same department, where he also worked as a researcher from 1990 to 1995 and from 1997 to 2004.

His research interests include Artificial Intelligence applications in Computational Linguistics (with emphasis on the Greek language), the development of algorithms and data structures, intelligent search and information retrieval, and the application of quantum algorithms to these domains. He has authored over 30 papers in international journals and conferences, focusing on Algorithms and Data Structures, Natural Language Processing, and Artificial Intelligence.

He has participated in more than 15 research and development projects and 5 educational programs, including representing the University of Patras in the European Master’s curriculum “Socrates CDA: European Masters in Language and Speech.” He serves as a reviewer and member of scientific committees in international journals and conferences and has twice been elected to the Board of the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society (HAIS).

He is a member of IEEE, ACM, the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), the Panhellenic Society of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (ΠΣΔΜΗ), the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society (HAIS), ACL/SIGNLL, the Hellenic Network of Open and Distance Learning (ΕΔΑΕ), and the International Computational Intelligence Society (ICIS). Since 2001, he has also collaborated with the Hellenic Open University as an Academic Tutor in the Informatics program.
